Why is blue the color of Advent?

Advent is a season about hope and the dawning of a new thing.   Being poetic, some think that it is like the dawn sky just before sunrise.  Others name blue as a royal color, preparing us for the coming king.  Blue is also ‘Mary’s’ color, and this season is closely connected to her moving toward the birth of Jesus.  I think all of these are helpful, but it is also important to remember that it is a season for reflection and thinking…it’s not Christmas yet!  By the way, some traditions use purple (just like Lent) with a pink candle for the third Sunday of Advent which is also known as Gaudete Sunday.   I do hope that you are able to pause in the Advent season, even for a moment, to receive its gifts! – Pastor Trudy Stoffel
