Why doesn’t the church comment more on things that are happening in the world?

At GLC we try to provide an alternative soundtrack to the 24 hour news channels, one that gives us a sanctuary -our faith- that can help us to hold and process all of the things we may be feeling and experiencing.  There are usually multiple levels of things happening.  I look in the congregation and I see a variety of people… someone who may or may not know the latest events in the world, but they are working through the diagnosis they just got or are trying to get basic needs met or are struggling in one of their closest relationships. The Gospel speaks to all of these things at the same time and beyond.  Here’s a prayer I’m praying this week (from Psalms for Praying by Nan Merrill), Psalm 57:  ‘Be merciful to me, O Beloved!  I open my heart to You, for in You is Love and Wisdom.  In the shadow of your wings I will find peace, until the fears that bind me are transformed.  I cry to the Source of all life, to the Eternal One whose Plan is wholeness for all.  Send your angels to awaken me, put to rest all that keeps me in darkness.’ – Pastor Trudy Stoffel
