Where is God in all of this war?

There are so many wars and battles in the Bible…and indeed, sometimes it seems that God chooses sides in these battles. The thing that is important to remember is that the people are not telling the story at the time it is happening…they are looking back. They are naming God’s presence with them in hindsight…and often God’s power is most clear when the people are at their weakest. Think David and Goliath or the people crossing the Red Sea with the most well-equipped army in the world (Egypt) chasing them. I think we are wise to exercise caution in stepping into God’s place to decide which side God may be on in a current war. Wars are very human things and we humans do not always check with God first. So that is the best work we can do…to pray, to read the stories of Jesus, to notice where and how He exerts power and direction. Then we do our best to humbly follow him.
