What is a Synod?  What is a Synod Assembly?

This Friday and Saturday (May 30-31), Amy Steenson, Michelle Lata and Pastor Trudy will go to the Metropolitan Chicago Synod Assembly. A Synod is a Greek word that means to meet together with a sense of traveling along. The ELCA (our denomination) is divided into 56 synods. Ours is Metro Chicago…the churches of Kane, Cook, Lake and DuPage counties traveling along together (about 165 congregations). The assembly is the only time each year we gather to conduct business (we have to vote on the budget), elect synod council members and other offices. We vote on a variety of resolutions, too, as we try to figure out what we may have to say as a whole church. Finally, there are times of worship, learning and fellowship. It is hard to set aside time for these kinds of things and I don’t always have the best attitude going in, but I always find meaning in being with others out there trying to do this Gospel work as faithfully as we can. Please hold the assembly and the work of our Synod in prayer! -Pastor Trudy Stoffel
