This big question was shared a while back in a Bible study. The shortest answer is that you can support a lot of things by using Scripture out of context. So…yes you can support a more ‘fundamentalist’ understanding AND a more ‘inclusive reading’. Having a Bible verse quote-off does not seem to advance the mission of the Gospel. The only way the Scripture becomes the Living Word is when we engage it deeply. This means reading it in its historical context and ours, looking deeply at the meaning of the words in their original languages, peeling back interpretations of others, and most importantly reading it along with the stories of Jesus. Does Jesus proclaim a bigger kingdom or a smaller one? Who gets the harshest words from Jesus? How big is what Jesus did? – Pastor Trudy Stoffel
