It isn’t always easy to tell…and sometimes you can only really know after the fact. Here are a few things to think about:
- Does what this prophet is saying make me uncomfortable? Prophets don’t usually tell us what we want to hear or let us stay in our comfort zone.
- Does what this prophet is saying align generally with what other prophets say? Prophets don’t have a huge variety of points to make. They generally speak about God’s justice and righteousness and call out idol worship and faithlessness.
- Does this prophet seem to be gaining power for themselves with their words? The Biblical prophets are reluctant at best. They often end up isolated from their families and communities.
- Have I prayed about this? Sometimes we aren’t aware of how much we are thinking ‘like the world’ until we spend a little time in prayer.
