Seeing as how I continue to learn new things about communion almost every time we celebrate, I can confidently say they don’t know everything about communion. But they do bring open hearts…in that way, we can learn from them. Sometimes knowing more knowledge doesn’t help us to understand communion more. I had a neuro-divergent student in my first call whose parent kept saying, ‘Not this year’ for several years after he reached the age we celebrated First Communion. Finally I asked why. The response was, ‘My child doesn’t understand complicated concepts, if something is not tangible, he doesn’t get it.’ My response…what is more tangible than bread in your hands? What a beautiful learning for me! He may have understood better than I did. Rather than focusing on understanding, I’d prefer that we commit ourselves to learning more every time we come to the table. Perhaps the third graders this weekend will shed some new light on the sacrament! – Pastor Trudy Stoffel
