Making Space Campaign

 Is Making Space still happening?

YES!! The Making Space campaign continues! As soon as we have tallied up our final costs for the sanctuary renovation, we will give a report of the balance of the Making Space Fund. Our next goal is to eliminate the debt of around $850,000 (just over $6000/month) from a 2009 building program and additional work done in 2019. So yes, keep giving to Making Space, knowing that we will be making space in our budget for additional ministry opportunities. – Pastor Trudy Stoffel

Why do we have to vote on the sanctuary reno project and how many people do we need?

In an ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) church, the congregation has the power!  The people have given the money for the renovation and the people get to say ‘yes’ to the work beginning.  This is exciting!  We need 10% of our confirmed membership present to vote (children/youth before confirmation cannot vote) so that would be 49 people needed for the sancruary renovation vote to pass this Sunday. – Pastor Trudy Stoffel

What is a “QCD”?

A Qualified Charitable Distribution or “QCD” allows individuals age 70 ½ and older to donate up to $108,000 in 2025 directly from an IRA to a charity.  A QCD can satisfy, in whole or in part, the “Required Minimum Distribution” for 2025. It is important to note that while the current RMD age is age 73 or older, anyone age 70 ½ or older may use a QCD.

Using a QCD means that the donation goes directly from one’s IRA to charity and is not reported on the 2025 tax return.  Therefore, a QCD reduces Adjusted Gross Income on the 2025 tax return, which can help seniors in numerous ways, including but not limited to:

  • Senior Real Estate Assessment Freeze
  • Reducing taxation of Social Security benefits
  • Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (“IRMAA”), which is a Medicare Part B & D surcharge that reduces Social Security payments
  • Reduction of taxable income/tax brackets
  • “Effective Tax Deduction” for those who don’t itemize.  You are not required to itemize to receive the tax benefits from a QCD

In summary, a QCD can be an effective way to give, which can also further enhance income tax planning.  Please consider this option as you contemplate giving to the general fund, Making Space campaign, or any other charities. QCD’s do need to be made before the end of the year. If you have any questions, contact Kraig Mickelsen.

We don’t pledge for the regular budget, why do we need to pledge for the Making Space Campaign?

I appreciate that we can speak frankly about the regular financial needs of our congregation and then trust that everyone will respond as they are able.  In my opinion, this is what it means to be a church- we understand the costs associated with running our church and we support it! Pledging to Making Space is a way to express excitement and enthusiasm for the project.  Your pledges and responses will help the leadership team determine when we can move forward.  This is a big project and will stretch us!  Your gifts and pledges of all amounts will be a way to say, ‘We’re ready to do this together!’  – Pastor Trudy Stoffel
